Gary Charles Mallett of Hermiston died on Jan. 14, 2024 in Hermiston at the age of 80.
He was born on March 29, 1943 in Yuba City, Calif. to Berl and Marie Mallett.
Gary grew up in Yuba City, Calif. and graduated from Yuba City Union High School in 1961. After graduating he went on to work for Crum Meat Company in McArthur, Calif., where his passion for the meat industry started. He then worked for Del Pero-Mondon Meat Company in Marysville, Calif. While living in Yuba City, he was also a volunteer fire fighter. Later, he expanded his meat processing career by purchasing a small meat plant in Stanfield in 1977 (Huston Meat Co.) and moved his family to pursue his passion. In Stanfield he continued his volunteer firefighting as a training agent. In 1985 he went into partnership with Eric Clow, operating Eastern Oregon Mobile Slaughter, where he built an enormous customer base and a great relationship with the community that he cherished.
Gary spent a lot of his time working (of course), and was quite the avid golfer. After almost 50 years of cutting meat, he retired to pursue one of his favorite hobbies, camping. He was a camp host for several years in northern California before finally retiring (again) and moving back to Hermiston. Gary was a member of the Elks, Eagles and Moose lodges.
Gary is survived by his beloved dog, Gidget; his sister, Virginia of Tacoma, Wash.; sister, Linda of Yuba City, Calif.; brother, Kenny of Yuba City, Calif.; and sister, Velda (John) of Hermiston; daughters, Annette (Ed) of Hermiston, Debbie (Frank) of Fossil and Teresa (Ted) of Hermiston; son, Richard of Bend; grandchildren, Jacob, Jamie (Bill), James Michael (Codi), Christopher (Falica), Daniel (Krysten), Jannette (Rich), Trevor (Tiffani), Blake, Alexis, and Casee; great-grandchildren, Charlie, Dusty, Twila, Hunter, Wyatt, Rhett, Hanna, River and Koda; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Christopher; brother, Garland; and wife, Jackie.
