Gene E. Hampton died on Jan. 2, 2024 at his home in Echo at the age of 73.
He was born on Oct. 27, 1950 in La Grande to Theron and Mayetta Zollman Hampton.
He was raised in Baker and Union counties. Gene was united in marriage to Eujeana Compton on Dec. 28, 1969 in Richland. They lived in Richland and La Grande before moving to Hermiston in 1976 and then to Echo in 2000, where they have lived since.
Gene had a passion for ranching, working with cattle most of his career. He was a member of the Echo Community Church. Gene volunteered with FFA, 4-H, delivering meals on wheels, and at the Echo Food Bank. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was a talented craftsman. Gene cherished time with his family and was a great supporter of his grandchildren in all of their activities.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Eujeana Hampton, Echo; daughter, Dawn Sharp and her husband Matthew, Hermiston; son, Micheal Hampton and his wife Dana, Echo; neighbor/daughter, Diane; brother, Michael Hampton, La Grande; sister, Pauline Puttie, Salem; sisters-in-law, Pat and Sheila; grandchildren, Chelsey, Mikenzie, Makiah, Bobbie, Riley, Gina, Dominick, Carter, Jackson, Macy Pearl, Jasper and Cherry Lynn.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents.
