Eugene H. “Gene” Jones of Hermiston died on Feb. 6, 2018 in Hermiston at the age of 91.
He was born on May 4, 1926 in Eugene to William and Corine Muntzel Jones.
Gene enlisted in the United States Army in 1944 and served during World War II before he was honorably discharged in 1947. He was united in marriage to Betty Stuhr on March 2, 1957 in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. They lived in Cottage Grove for a time before settling in Hermiston in 1970, where he had lived since.
Gene worked as a conductor/brakeman for the Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement. He was a longtime member of the Union Pacific Old Timers, Hermiston Eagles Lodge and the American Legion Post #37.
Gene and Betty enjoyed making crafts, many of which were entered into fairs and sold at craft shows and flea markets.
Gene put on a gruff exterior, but it was easy to see through it and know he was a loving and caring man who would do almost anything to help someone.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jones, in 2005 and by his parents.
A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held on Friday, Feb. 16, 2018 at 10 a.m. at the Hermiston Cemetery.
