Girl Scouts from Umatilla County recently showed their dedication to both the military and to wildlife.

Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington Troop 10298 of Echo was able to collect and hand deliver 526 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to the sailors stationed on the USS Shoup DDG 86 over spring break.

The command of the USS Shoup, which is stationed at or near Seattle, Wash., then surprised the girls by making a presentation of appreciation to the girls. The Captain of the ship shook each girl’s hand.

Blue Mountain Wildlife Executive Director Lynn Tompkins, back right, accepted donations recently from Girl Scouts from Pendleton.
The cookies the troop delivered were donated by their customers through the Gift of Caring program during the cookie sale this year. If you would like more information about this amazing group of girls, why they chose the USS Shoup as their Gift of Caring organization and what they did on board the ship, you can contact their troop’s leader, Jamie Wiseman, at 541-701-4138.

Not to be outdone, the Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington Troop 51413 of Pendleton donated over $100 in supplies to Blue Mountain Wildlife.

The girls elected to spend part of their earnings from their cookie sale this year to help the Pendleton nonprofit that helps rehabilitate birds of prey. They purchased cotton balls, SOS pads, stamps and more. Lynn Tompkins took the troop on a tour of the facility when they delivered the items.

If you would like more information about why the girls chose to help Blue Mountain Wildlife and what they learned during their visit, you can contact their troop leader, Flora Christenson, at 541-377-1238.
