Fifteen cases of gonorrhea have been reported in the past eight weeks, according to the Umatilla County Public Health Department.

Sarah Williams, public health director for the Umatilla County Public Health Department, said gonorrhea, a common, sexually-transmitted infection, has been seen more frequently in the Northwest over the last three months.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, as many as 820,000 people in the United States are infected with gonorrhea each year.

“Any sexually active person can become infected with gonorrhea,” said Sharon Waldern, clinic nurse supervisor, “but most do not show symptoms. If left untreated gonorrhea can lead to infertility. Key prevention measures include abstaining from sex or using safe sex practices.”

Umatilla County Public Health urges people to get tested even if you don’t have any symptoms and get routine screenings if you are sexually active.
