The Boardman Community Development Association has announced the opening of the Harvest Town USA produce stand in Boardman.
Located on Front Street, the stand features locally- and Northwest-grown produce, said Jim Young, who leases and operates the facility. The stand is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12 noon to 5 p.m. through the end of August, possibly longer depending on the amount of business, Young said.
The stand opened in early July. Available produce includes Hermiston watermelons, cantaloupes, tomatoes, Northwest-grown nectarines, peaches, plums, cucumbers, and Boardman-grown sweet corn. Young said variety is being increased as new produce becomes available.
The community development association received a total of $7,500 from the Morrow County Court for the project, said Kathy Neal, Boardman Community Development Association committee member. All of the contribution came from the court’s discretionary fund with a contribution of $5,000 approved at the May 28 meeting and another $2,500 during the July 16 meeting.
“By placing the produce stand in a highly visible location we hope to draw travelers off the freeway,” Neal said. “This gives us an opportunity to encourage visitors to explore Boardman and learn more about the many reasons there are to live, work, and play here.”
Morrow County and Umatilla county businesses were used to complete electrical, construction, and any other tasks at the site.
Materials, time, and money were donated by the following organizations:
• Northwest Container Handlers
• Morrow County Court
• Boardman Community Development Association
• City of Boardman
• Port of Morrow
