Box office expectations are high for the new movie American Sniper, which opened last month in just a handful of theaters but drew large crowds.
Much of the movie’s attraction – besides its subject matter – surely stems from the marquee names attached to the film. It was directed by Clint Eastwood and stars Bradley Cooper. But interest in the film among Eastern Oregon residents is due to one of the co-authors of the book the film is based on – Scott McEwen.
McEwen, who lives in San Diego and is a 1979 graduate of Heppner High School, has gone on to become a successful author and trail attorney. He co-wrote American Sniper with Chris Kyle and Jim DeFelice. It’s based on the experiences of Kyle, who recorded the most sniper kills in U.S. military history.
The film was given a limited release over the Christmas holiday, appearing in only four theaters nationwide, but broke box office records for limited release films. The film reportedly brought in $850,000 from four theaters over a period of four days, an average of $212,000 per location for Warner Bros.
The movie will be released throughout the country on Jan. 16.
McEwen has written four other books – Sniper Elite in 2013, Target America and Eyes on Target in 2014, and The Sniper and the Wolf, due out in May.
