Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston said the department received a call about a possible stabbing at 1100 W. Sunland Ave., around 11:05 a.m. this morning.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 41-year-old woman with a wound to her neck. Officers canvassed the neighborhood and within minutes, located and detained Richard D. Heathman, 32, the resident at 1100 W. Sunland Ave.

“Heathman was extremely aggressive and non-compliant with officers so he was transported directly to the jail in Pendleton,” Edmiston said. While en route, Heathman was able to move his hands to the front of his body allowing him to cause significant damage to the patrol vehicle. Edmiston said. Heathman attempted to choke the transporting officer with a seatbelt so the Oregon State Police responded to the transporting officer’s location and helped secure Heathman further.

The female victim was sent to Portland via Life Flight for treatment, though Edmiston said the injury did not appear to be life-threatening.

The chief said Heathman will likely facxe assault and vandalism charges.
