Several hundred people lined up and down Highland Avenue Saturday morning to cheer on the Hermiston Bulldogs as they pulled out of the Hermiston High School parking lot on their way to Hillsboro to take on the Marist Spartans in the 5A state semi-final game.
Fans began lining the street around 7:30 a.m., carrying signs, blowing horns and whistles and rattling cowbells. Just before 8:15 a.m., the team buses pulled out with an escort from a Hermiston fire truck and police car with sirens blaring.
Fans yelled “Go, Dawgs” as the players waved to them as they drove off.
The semi-final game in Hillsboro is scheduled to kick off at 5:30 p.m. It puts the fifth-seeded Bulldogs against the eighth-seed Marist Spartans. The other 5A semi-final game features a matchup between second-seeded Silverton and third-seeded Springfield.
The 10-1 Bulldogs are entering the game on a six-game winning streak, while the 9-3 Spartans have won their last three games. Hermiston’s high-powered offense scored 468 points during the season while giving up just 156. Hermiston has scored 50 or more points five times this season.
Marist has scored 298 points on the year while yielding 224. Their highest scoring game of the year was a 44-22 win over Thurston to open the season.
