2017 MLK Walk
People of all ages and backgrounds took part in Monday's celebration of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. in downtown Hermiston.

A hearty crowd did not let frigid temperatures and icy streets and sidewalks keep them from celebrating the legacy of America’s most influential civil rights leader on Monday during the annual Martin Luther King Jr. march in Hermiston.

Singing We Shall Overcome, dozens of citizens walked in peace through downtown Hermiston Monday afternoon. It was the 17th year that the Black International Awareness Club has put on the march in Hermiston. During an address to the crowd in front of City Hall, Hermiston Mayor Dave Drotzmann paid tribute to both King and the mayor’s predecessor, when he noted that it was former Mayor Bob Severson who insisted that city hall close during the holiday celebrating King’s birth.

The mayor said the city of Hermiston embraces the message of King that calls for the acceptance and the celebration of diversity in America.

“There is a sign outside of Hermiston that says we are an inclusive city,” Drotzmann said.

“More than 50 years ago, Martin Luther King helped pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” Drotzmann said. “He did through peaceful protest. He did more with words than fists.”

The mayor said when he looks at the Hermiston community, he doesn’t see races.

“I see the human race,” he said.

Drotzmann said that nearly 50 years after the death of King, it is as important as ever to heed his message.

“Continue to stand up against injustice,” he said. “God bless Martin Luther King Jr., and God bless your for participating today.”
