The Hermiston City Council will hear a request from Sanitary Disposal Inc. to increase garbage service rates for Hermiston residents. The request will be made at the council’s regular Monday, Jan. 13 meeting.
Garbage service is provided by Sanitary Disposal for residents in western Umatilla County and northern Morrow County. For residents within Hermiston city limits, billing is included with other utilities and rate changes must be approved by the city council.
Sanitary Disposal Inc. is requesting an increase of $1.55 per month for a 90-gallon bin. The new monthly rate of $18.80 would still be the lowest in comparable nearby cities and counties. If approved, the increase would begin in February.
The Umatilla County and Morrow County commissioners approved a similar increase of $1.70 this past fall for customers who live outside Hermiston city limits and in Boardman and Irrigon. The Hermiston City Council last agreed to a garbage rate increase request in May 2016.
The city council will meet at 7 p.m. in the Lanham Room downstairs at the Hermiston Library, 235 E. Gladys Ave., as cleanup work is still under way at City Hall.

I support if we can get recycling and green yard waste cans too. Hermiston is behind the times on recycling.
