Hermiston will have a new skate adventure park following action taken Monday night by the Hermiston City Council.

The council voted unanimously to contract with California Skateparks to design and build the park.

The park is expected to be 18,000 square feet with a two area for skating, a restroom, climbing rock, passive recreation area, parkour, bicycle pump track with security lighting and cameras.

The skate park will target ages 12-18 but will be open to the entire community. It will be located in the heart of the city at 345 S. First St., across from the Hermiston Police Department on property the city purchased in 2016.

“This is s premier place for a skate park to go,” said Hermiston Parks and Recreation Director Brandon Artz. “It’s right across from the police department and paramedics and EMTs in case any situations should arise, which I’m sure they will.”

The project will be in two phases. Phase 1 will include construction of a 8,900-square-foot skate area and restroom facility. The cost is estimated at $545,683, half of which is coming from a Water Conservation Fund grant with the city matching.

Phase II will include a parkour area, a second skate area, covered shelter, a climbing rock, bike pump track and lighting and security cameras. The city is applying for a Local Government Grant Program grant to pay for Phase II, also estimated at a cost of over $545,000.

In 2017, the Hermiston Parks & Recreation Department issued an request for proposals (RFP) from qualified skateboard park design firms. After review of eight firm proposals, California Skateparks was chosen to design the concept plans for the skatepark. Using the initial concept for the RFP presentation, the parks department and California Skateparks held public meetings with local skate enthusiast to gauge the interest in design and elements. California Skateparks modified the original concept to the most current version with two phases.

Construction of Phase I is expected to get under way in June.
