The first snow of the season is on the ground and the city of Hermiston has its street crews out clearing the roadways.

On its Facebook page, the city outlined is three-phase system for clearing snow and ice, starting with main streets and ending with residential neighborhoods.

Here’s how it works:

Phase 1 – Crews clear and maintain the main traffic routes through the city.

Phase 2 – If snow accumulation has stopped, crews move into the hill routes and downtown commercial areas.

Phase 3 – Crews move into the residential areas. Personnel and equipment are spread out and work in a counterclockwise rotation throughout the neighborhoods.

If another storm puts down new snow while crews are in Phases 2 or 3, they will return to Phase 1 routes. Crews may also be pulled away to respond to emergencies such as water line breaks in roadways, motor vehicle collisions, and fires.

Remember to slow down and drive carefully when winter weather starts sticking to roadways.
