Hermiston FFA and FCCLA Students Successful at State Competitions

Hermiston High School FFA and FCCLA students recently returned from successful state-level competitions.

HHS Senior Kylie Temple was elected to serve as the 2023-24 Oregon FFA State vice-president, and she also won the Prepared Public Speaking Leadership Development Event, which grants her a trip to the National FFA Convention. This marks the third straight year that Temple has earned a trip to Nationals. Notably, she has qualified to attend in four different contests.

The Parliamentary Procedure and Conduct of Chapter Meetings teams placed first in state, and will compete at the National FFA Convention. The Parliamentary Procedure team members are Elle Blakely, Alexis Castillo, Cozette Cooley, Addison Garberg, Payton Howard, and Jaydan McKim. Members of the Conduct of Chapter Meetings team are Taylor Blackburn, Catherine Doherty, Hunter Hansell, Keegin Keely, Gabrielle Mendoza, Delaney Wieseler, and Balie Wilson.

Jace Wallace placed first in his agriscience project titled “Mental Health in Agriculture,” and the Agricultural Issues Forum team, of Kaley Day, Kole Harris, Austyn Katsel, Emma Perkins, Alexis Schlupe, and Jace Wallace, placed second at state.

HHS FCCLA members attended the Oregon FCCLA State Leadership Conference in Portland on March 16-18. Eight members qualified to compete at the National Leadership Conference in their Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) events.

The national qualifiers include Andrea Sanchez Garavito in Nutrition and Wellness; Ashley Treadwell in Job Interview; Isay Osorio Estrada and Robert Bartman in Level 2 Career Investigation; Karina Olvera in Level 3 Career Investigation; and the teams of Hailey Melville and Ashley Treadwell and Gonzalo Govea and Valarie Mendoza in Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation.

Sanchez Garavito, Treadwell, and Melville took the top spots in their events and earned gold medals. Silver medals were awarded to Andres Carrillo Alatorre and Ester Mateo-Toribio in Level 3 Career Investigation.
