The Hermiston girls basketball team took home the third-place trophy at the state 5A basketball tournament in Eugene on Saturday.
The Bulldogs, led by a game-high 12 points from junior McKenzie Byrd, turned back Corvallis, 52-39. The third-place showing was the Hermiston girls’ second-best finish ever in the state tournament and was the fifth time they earned a trophy.
Byrd grabbed 16 rebounds to go along with her 12 points. Hermiston’s Jansen Edmiston added 9 points and Heidi Walchli scored 8 for the Bullddogs.
The Bulldogs found themselves in the battle for third place after falling to Springfield, 61-40, in the semi-finals on Friday at Matthew Knight Arena. They advanced to the semis after topping Bend, 55-46, in the quarters and beating Liberty by a score of 60-51 in the first round.
Hermiston finished the season with a record of 18-9.
