CommuniCare act as “mini-foundations,” where students select a community issue or service area they feel passionate about and are challenged to raise $1,500 during the fall and winter months. For every dollar raised, The CARE Foundation will match 10:1, up to a maximum gift of $15,000, money that will be going back into the community.
Students have a school year to research Oregon nonprofits, evaluate grant proposals and meet with representatives from those organizations to decide which to fund. CommuniCare is looking for organizations whose work aligns with the foundation’s mission.
Harold and Arlene Schnitzer started CommuniCare in 1997. It is the signature operating program of The Harold & Arlene Schitnzer CARE Foundation. The program is committed to small, community giving through a school-based youth philanthropy program. Since its inception, 1,726 students have participated and 296 non-profit organizations have benefitted.
