On Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 6:15-7:15 p.m., Hermiston High School will hold the second annual advanced placement language and debate final in the auditorium.
The top four debaters from the advanced placement language and writing class will hold the public debate. The objective of the debate is for students to communicate in a way that is persuasive to the non-specialist or “citizen judge.”
The debate topic, created by the National Speech and Debate League, is about whether the United States’ federal government should substantially increase its economic and/or diplomatic engagement with the People’s Republic of China.
Dr. Beth Anderson, the Advance Placement Language and Writing teacher, assigns a debate topic every summer to her entering students.
“When I was in high school, I remember the only thing that really got me researching was when I had to debate in an AP government class against my peers.” She believes the debate challenges her students to examine both sides of an issue, which will help them beyond their academic career.
The names of the finalists will go on the HHS Advanced Placement Language & Writing Debate Competition trophy, and the individual debater with the highest scores will be announced.
Cookies and coffee will be served at a small reception following the debate.
