Hermiston Man Caught After Stealing Deputy’s Car During Arrest

The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Hermiston man who allegedly stole a sheriff’s deputy’s vehicle while being arrested on another incident.

Around 8:50 a.m. on Thursday, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chris Daugherty responded to the area of 33464 E. Punkin Center in Hermiston for a report of a suspicious vehicle. Daugherty located a 1994 red Ford Explorer and reported to dispatch he had two subjects detained, Tyler Morris, 19, and Christopher Alvin Phillips, 23, both of Hermiston.

Daugherty requested a tow to impound the vehicle. At 10:36 a.m., Daugherty advised dispatch his patrol vehicle had just been stolen by Phillips.

Multiple Law Enforcement Agencies responded to the area and Phillips was located by Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office at 1:20 p.m. in the area of Diagonal Road near Short Stop in Hermiston. He is in custody at this time.
