A Hermiston man has been charged with first-degree murder following a shooting death at the Metro Mart parking lot in Hermiston early Sunday morning.

Ethan Mathew Bowe, 23, was arrested around 8:05 a.m. Sunday morning in connection with the death of Kevin James Hines, 27, of Hermiston.

Officers from the Hermiston Police Department (HPD) were called to the Metro Mart at 1120 W. Highland Avenue around 1:24 a.m. on Sunday following a reported shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Hines unresponsive and not breathing. HPD Capt. Travis Eynon said Umatilla County Fire District #1 medics arrived shortly after and “worked valiantly on the male” but his wounds were fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives from HPD and the Umatilla/Morrow County Major Crimes Team worked through the night investigating the case before Bowe was arrested at his home. Bowe has been charged with first-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and tampering with evidence.

Eynon said the alleged shooting was not a random act.

“There is no reason to believe anyone else is in danger,” said Eynon.
