OregonLive has a great story about Hermiston’s Earl Woods and how he survived a 1948 flood that wiped out the city of Vanport.

Woods was 5 years old at the time of the flood, and although it was a traumatic experience, Woods recalls in the story that when his family got word during dinner that the dike had broken, his first thought was that he wouldn’t have to eat the grits his mother had prepared.

The story goes on to tell how Woods was rescued by a mystery man and how Woods had tried over the years to find the man to thank him, he never could track him down (since the story ran, the mystery man has been identified).
