Hermiston School District middle school broadcasting students received national recognition this winter as three Sandstone Middle School (SMS) students competed in the Student Television Network (STN) fall national competition.

Four additional students received awards from the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA).

SMS students received honorable mention in the middle school category “Middle School Promo” video and were recognized for their student store promo video. The video highlighted what the student store offers, when it is open, and how students make purchases at the student store. The students, who are in the SMS Broadcasting 3 class instructed by Andrea Cerrillo, produced the video from start to finish on their own.“Many students from all over the nation make videos and compete in these STN competitions,” said Cerrillo. “It is an honor for these students and Sandstone to now be nationally recognized.”STN is helping teachers shape the next generation of storytelling by empowering student voices through broadcast journalism, film, and multimedia education.Current Hermiston High School freshmen Naima Velasco and Maggie Katin received fourth place in the 2022 Middle School Broadcast Story of the Year competition, for their story titled “Assembly Tradition Makes a Comeback.” Velasco and Katin were eighth graders at Armand Larive Middle School when the video was submitted to NSPA. Former ALMS student Isabella Martinez and SMS student Mickenzie Marks received honorable mention for their submission in the same category, for their story on Sweet Potato’s Closet.
