Hermiston voters said no to marijuana while Umatilla voters approved a school bond measure Tuesday night.
Voters in Hermiston approved a local measure that prohibits the sale, manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution of marijuana in the city’s commercial zones. The vote was 2,746 or 54.4 percent in favor and 2,302 or 45.60 percent against the measure.
The Umatilla school bond measure passed Tuesday with nearly 54 percent of the vote. The measure will construct and improve Umatilla schools with the issuance of $10,500,000 in bonds. The Umatilla School District will also receive a $4 million state grant.
Also in Hermiston, voters sent back all four city council incumbents. Doug Primmer received 3,059 votes, Rod Hardin received 3,014, Manuel Gutierrez tallied 2,561 and John Kirwan received 2,498. Challenger Mark Gomolski came up short with 2,452.
Umatilla County Sheriff Terry Rowan defeated challenger Ryan Lehnert with 55.34 percent of the vote to Lehnert’s 44.37 percent.
State Sen. Bill Hansell (R-Athena) easily won re-election over Indepedent challenger Barbara Dickerson. State Rep. Greg Smith (District 57) and State Rep. Greg Barreto (District 58) ran unopposed.
Back in Umatilla, Michael Roxbury defeated Cheryl Vermillion, 557 to 381, for Position 2 on the city council. Mark Ribich and Roak TenEyck ran unopposed.
In Stanfield, Susan Whelan, Don Tyrell and Pamela McSpadden were elected to the city council.
In Echo, Eujeana Hampton will serve as mayor after running unopposed and Robert Harris and Jerry Gaunt were elected to the city council.
