A touchdown pass with less than a minute left in the game gave the Hermiston Bulldogs and the home fans a reason to celebrate as they opened the 2022 season with a 35-28 win over the Hanford Falcons Friday night.
Sophomore quarterback Isaac Corey hit Landon Shilhanek on a 35-yard touchdown pass with just 40 seconds left in the game to break a 28-28 tie.
Both teams looked impressive in the first half. Hermiston scored twice in the first quarter when Corey connected with Jaime Ramirez-Ortega for a 65-yard score barely a minute into the game. Late in the first quarter, Ben Larson scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Corey to make it 14-0.
The Falcons roared back in the second, scoring three times to take a 21-14 lead into halftime.
Just as they did in the first quarter, the Bulldogs scored twice in the third to go up by a touchdown. Corey and Ramirez-Ortega connected on a 3-yard score, and Ami Taui scored on a short run to put Hermiston back on top, 28-21.
Hanford tied the game early in the fourth on an 8-yard run to tie the game.
Corey ended his night with four touchdown passes, 230 yards in the air and completing 16 of 27 attempts.
Hermiston is a young football team and going to be special!
