Winter is fast approaching, and with it, basketball. The Hermiston Parks and Recreation Department youth recreational leagues are forming now, and signup is under way for clinics for the very young.

Youth and Kindergarten Recreational Basketball Leagues – Players in grades 1-6 will be separated by grade and gender. The recreation department has partnered with Rip City Academy to provide an enhanced basketball experience. The partnership includes a free basketball clinic at the Moda Center on the Trail Blazer court and a free ticket to a selected Trail Blazer game. The academy will also host a clinic for volunteer coaches.

The co-ed kindergarten league introduces children to the rules of the game to prepare them for future league play. Game day consists of a 30-minute practice followed by a 30-minute game.

The season for both leagues runs Jan. 5-Feb. 16. The cost for both is $40 for residents or $50 for non-residents. Jerseys are $20 each. All games are played on Saturdays at Hermiston school gyms. The signup deadline for a $5 discount is Dec. 1; the regular deadline is Dec. 14. Late registration is allowed Dec. 17-21 for a $5 fee.

All equipment is provided. Volunteer coaches are needed for both leagues. If interested in coaching, please contact Hermiston Parks and Recreation. Schedules will be available at www.sportability.com on Dec. 28.

Junior Basketball Clinics – The three clinics are for children 3, 4 and 5 years of age. They teach the fundamentals of the sport – passing, shooting, dribbling, defense and teamwork – through fun, skill-based games. The cost is $30 for residents or $38 for non-residents. The clinics run Jan. 5-Feb. 9 and take place on Saturdays at Hermiston school gyms. The signup deadline is Dec. 15.
