A lot of hard work and community spirit was on display in Hermiston over the past several days and it did not go unnoticed by the Hermiston Police Department.

On Tuesday, Capt. Travis Eynon posted the following message to the community on the HPD Facebook page:

Today I just want to give a shout out to this fabulous community we live in. We all have a lot to be thankful for in being a part of this community.

Saturday brought us an incredible storm and caused a tremendous amount of destruction to our homes, parks, vehicles, businesses and some public facilities. There were trees down all over the area, there were cars smashed, buildings destroyed and a whole lot of roofs damaged or in some cases blown completely off. Sunday and Monday were amazing. Everyone pulled together and began the work. People brought out saws, yard tools, trucks, trailers, tractors, light and in some cases heavy equipment and went right to work taking care of each other. As I drive around today, I am completely dazzled by the difference from Sunday morning. The amount of cleanup is incredible, but the amount of care this community has shown for their neighbors, friends and often for strangers has been overwhelming.

Our community also had two separate community organized demonstrations. Each for different reasons. The emotions of current events have created complete chaos from these events in other places. Both of these demonstrations went off with no significant issues. Both demonstrations were effective in that they were able to share their respective messages and it was all done peacefully with no civil unrest.

These are some of the reasons I reflect today and ponder on how much I love this community!
