The Hermiston Police Department is remembering a fallen officer on its Facebook page today – the anniversary of his death.
According to the HPD, officer Ronald G. Kilby was shot and killed in the line of duty on Thursday, Oct. 8th, 1959, while attempting to arrest two burglary suspects during a traffic stop. The suspects fled to Washington where they were apprehended the next day, and eventually extradited back to Oregon to stand trial. They were later convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Kilby was just 28 and had served with the department for only four months prior to his death. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Merit for Valor, and was survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
From the HPD Facebook page:
“60 years have passed since Officer Kilby was senselessly murdered in the line of duty. However, the pain of loss for his family, his friends, and this community will never be forgotten. The Hermiston Police Department respectfully requests everyone take a moment to recognize the selfless service, honor, and ultimate sacrifice Hermiston Police Officer Ronald Kilby gave to this community.”
