The Hermiston School District has outlined the kindergarten and first grade hybrid learning model, which involves two cohorts on opposite schedules.
Those students returning to in-person learning will be placed in one of two cohorts, with group A on-site in the morning and group B on-site in the afternoon, each for a three-hour block of in-person instruction.
“With the downward trend in Hermiston case counts, we are excited to start hybrid learning for kindergarten and first grade students on Feb. 16,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tricia Mooney. “It is our goal that by releasing the school day model it will allow families the necessary planning time to accommodate the schedule.”
Group A students will have on-site learning time from 7:55 a.m. to 11:05 a.m. and virtual classes with applied learning time in the afternoon. Group B students will participate in virtual classes and applied learning in the morning with on-site classes from 11:55 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. All on-site students will attend school Monday through Thursday, with Friday being a flex learning day. Friday will be the same for all on-site students, consisting of applied learning time in the morning and comprehensive distance learning in the afternoon from 12:05 p.m. to 2:40 p.m.
To maintain the necessary small cohorts, students whose attendance area requires busing to school will be included in the A cohort, and students who live within the walk zone will be included with the B cohort.
In planning for students to return, administration has determined opportunities for parents to volunteer. Volunteers will be needed in the following areas: student entry/exit screening, student pick-up/drop-off, playground support, sanitization, and crosswalk support. The link to the survey will be posted to the district web site, elementary school web sites, and district social media outlets.
Students remaining in Comprehensive Distance Learning will have applied learning time in the morning and CDL from 11:05 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. School staff will reach out to individual families to confirm participation in hybrid learning and share further details.
Thought HSD had been credited with innovation and ability of cleaning rooms. What is wrong with putting all back to school? NOW? OTHER THAN TEACHERS WHO MAY NOT WANT TO TEACH?
