The Hermiston School Board has authorized district administration to enter into contract with Kirby Nagelhout Construction Company for the Rocky Heights Elementary School bond project.

Following the bid opening on March 3, Kirby Nagelhout was the apparent low bid, with a base bid amount of $23,390,000.

“The district and community are on a great path, financially, with the Kirby Nagelhout bid,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tricia Mooney. “The bid came in about $3 million under initial projections. Community members can rest assured, with an independent review by the Bond Oversight Committee, HSD will appropriately use community tax dollars throughout the implementation of the November 2019 voter-approved bond projects.”

Kirby Nagelhout Construction is based in Bend with offices in Portland and Pendleton.

The bid timelines were staggered for the two elementary school projects, to encourage bidding by regional small and medium-sized businesses. Bid opening for Loma Vista Elementary School is scheduled for March 17.

Rocky Heights Elementary School (RHES) will be a new, single-story building that will replace the existing structure in the same location. At about 73,500 square feet, the new school will serve approximately 600 students, with 24 classrooms, a library, gymnasium, multipurpose room, and other spaces. Work will include demolition of the existing RHES at Standard Avenue and Seventh Street, and site improvements will include two new parking lots with drop off areas, a main entry plaza, two new playfields, playground structures, and new perimeter fencing.

Loma Vista Elementary School (LVES) will also be a new, approximately 73,500-square-foot single-story building serving around 600 students in 24 classrooms, a library, gymnasium, multipurpose room, and other spaces. LVES will be located at N.E. 10th Street and East Theater Lane on undeveloped property. Site improvements include two new parking lots with drop off areas, a main entry plaza, a playfield, playground structures, and perimeter fencing.

Construction on the elementary school projects will begin this spring and conclude in the summer of 2022. Businesses interested in bidding, should call the Hermiston Plan Center with questions and for further information.
