Hermiston schools will participate in the Great Oregon ShakeOut, a statewide effort to bring people to talk and practice what they would do in an earthquake. Over 560,00 participants are registered to participate in the drill on Thursday, Oct. 19.
The purpose of the event is to promote response preparedness. In an earthquake the recommended response is to drop, cover, and hold on.
- If you are indoors, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, against an interior wall in an office, home or school. Crawl away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that can fall such as light fixtures or furniture. Cover your head and neck with your arms and hold on until the shaking stops.
- If you are in bed, stay there and cover your head and neck with a pillow. Remain there until the shaking stops.
- If you are outdoors stay away from buildings, trees, streetlights, power lines.
- If you are driving, pull over to a clear location, stop and stay there with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking stops. Once the shaking stops, proceed with caution; avoid bridges or ramps that might have been damaged.
- If you use a wheelchair or other mobility devices the Earthquake Country Alliance recommends that you lock the wheels, bend over, cover your head and neck with your arms, pillow, book or whatever is available, remain seated until the shaking stops. For additional information, go online.
Since the safety of our students and staff is our top priority; drills are conducted in our schools on a regular basis. The Hermiston School District encourage parents to take this opportunity to talk as a family, create a plan, and practice what they would do in the event of an earthquake.
