Hermiston’s famous watermelons got a little more famous after being featured on national television this weekend.
CBS Sunday Morning had a four-minute segment on Hermiston watermelons and an interview with Jack Bellinger of Bellinger Farms. Correspondent Luke Burbank traveled to Hermiston to find out what makes Hermiston melons the sweetest in the country.
“We typically have very warm days, but our nights are much cooler,” explained Bellinger, who described a Hermiston watermelon as “a little slice of Americana.” Eastern Oregon summer weather helps increase the carb content of the melon which then converts to sugar.
“You know, watermelons are considered a happy fruit,” Bellinger said. “People need a reason to feel good.”
Go Hermiston!! It’s so amazing to know that our pride and joy has made its way on National T.V. !!
Wish we had known so we could have watched it. Yeah for Hermiston and Bellinger Farms
