Bernard Ira “Andy” Anderson passed on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015 at his home in Hermiston with the love of his life by his side. He was 94.

He was born April 1, 1921 in Morrisonville, Ill., to Ira Anderson and Lizzie Frederick.

Andy enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1939 and began what would be a highly decorated and honorable military career. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant Officer in April 1943. After completing flight school, he was assigned to a B-24 squadron. While stepping in for a fellow officer during a mission in 1944, his B-24 aircraft was shot down over Gotha, Germany and he was subsequently held as a Prisoner of War for 14 months. He was awarded a Purple Heart commendation for his bravery on this mission. After 27 years of service, Andy retired in June 1966 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Andy went on to instruct young pilots at Big Bend Community College and then started a career flying private aircraft for Executive Jet Aviation (EJA) – which later became the company known today as NetJets. During his time at EJA, he flew multiple high ranking officials including King Hussein of Jordan.

Andy was an incredibly brilliant and humble soul with an inspiring, optimistic outlook on life. Anyone who had the honor of knowing him considered themselves fortunate. He was admired and loved deeply by his children and grandchildren who will miss him greatly. Andy was a true American hero and everlasting example of one of our country’s Greatest Generation.

Andy is survived by his forever loving wife and “Sweetie”, Violet Anderson of Hermiston.
