Hermiston’s Cleda Schoonover Passes Away at 90

Cleda June Schoonover passed away on Sept. 20, 2017 at the age of 90 with her loving husband Bill by her side.

She was born in Sylvia, Kan. to Kasper and May Postier Nusser.

She left Kansas with her family during the Dust Bowl, ending up in Hermiston. She graduated from Hermiston High School in 1945, where she made many lifelong friends. She was the drummer for her high school dance band and loved dancing, bowling, playing cards and camping with friends and family.

Cleda married Jerry Coxen in 1946 and had three children, Jim, Sandy and Sue. The couple later divorced. At her 40th class reunion, she became reacquainted with classmate Bill Schoonover. She and Bill married in 1986. Bill took Cleda on a tour of Europe and fulfilled her lifelong dream of visiting Germany. She and Bill enjoyed travelling, visiting friends and family and spending many winters in Arizona.

She is survived by her husband, Bill; children, Jim (Sally) Coxen, Sandy Nolte and Sue Orem; stepchildren, Dick (TJ) Schoonover, Sue (Ron) Parham and Randall Schoonover; grandchildren, Lynn (Dan) Witt, Tod (Rebecca) Coxen, Renee Coxen, Josh Coxen, Angie (Ryan) Zirkle and Matt (Lena) Orem; step-grandchildren, Jake, Riley, Sydney and Cami Parham and Claire, Henry and Owen Schoonover; seven great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; brother, Dick (Sally) Nusser, sister, Donna (Dick) Bensel; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Marcel Nusser.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017 at Hermiston Cemetery.
