A Hermiston woman will be honored by the U.S. Congress this month for her long service in the Civil Air Patrol.

According to a story on the KOIN 6 website, Hellenmerie Walker, 89, will receive the Congressional Gold Medal on Dec. 10. She joined the CAP as a cadet in the Portland squadron when she was 16 around 1942. She left CAP in 1944, got married, had 7 children and built a life. But after her husband died in 1979, she re-joined CAP.

Walker will not be making the trip for the ceremony, but her 62-year-old daughter Karliene Vack — who also joined CAP — will accept the award.
