Hermiston School District Athletic Director Larry Usher has been named the 2017-18 Administrator of the Year.
According to the district, Usher has been a catalyst for improving school culture by increasing student attendance at athletic events, starting the student tailgate parties, introducing an improved mascot, placing emphasis on our school brand, and using social media in a positive way to promote events.
His efforts to move HSD to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) demonstrated his commitment to doing the best for student-athletes and pursuing the district goal of striving to be premier, according to the district.
The district also cited Usher’s efforts to build trust with AAU coaches, stakeholders from the Booster Club, Linebackers Club, and Music Boosters, which has helped create opportunities for all students. He is often the organizer and facilitator for tournaments, college use, and community activities that have a positive economic impact on our community.
Usher was hired into the Hermiston School District in 2002 as a high school social studies
teacher. In 2010 Usher assumed the dean of students’ position at Sandstone Middle School.
In July 2013 was promoted to assistant principal and in July 2014 became principal. In 2016 he was hired as the athletic director.
