Hermiston High School’s College Savings Group is beginning a new partnership with the CommuniCare Program from Portland.

The CommuniCare Program is designed to introduce young people in the importance of community service. Through the efforts of Harold & Arlene Schnitzer’s CARE Foundation and Hermiston High School, a mini-grant of $250 will be awarded to Hermiston High School as seed money. The students are being challenged to raise $1,000 and if they are successful, the CARE Foundation will award them a matching grant of up to $10,000.

The high school students involved in the College Savings Group will get to research the needs of the Hermiston community and will decide how they will gift the raised funds back into the community. The College Savings Group students worked on fundraising their first $1,000 by selling water bottles at the Umatilla County Fair. Oxford Suites generously donated water bottles and Smitty’s ACE Hardware donated coolers and wagons to aid the students with their fundraising efforts.

“I am very excited about this new partnership with the CommuniCare Program,” said Liz Marvin, College Bound coordinator. “Our students will have the opportunity to be involved in different fundraising activities and contribute back to the community that has been very supportive of the schools, students and staff.”
