The clock is ticking on a decision that would allow Hermiston High School to join the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) and compete against Tri-Cities-area teams.
The school petitioned to join the WIAA in January in an effort to avoid being moved into the Class 5A Mt. Hood Conference and compete against Barlow, Centennial, David Douglas, Gresham, Hood River Valley, Reynolds and Sandy. According to an article in the Tri-City Herald, playing in that conference would mean the Bulldogs would travel up to 3,000 miles a season just to play conference games.
If it were to join the WIAA across the Columbia River, it would only have to travel 630 miles to compete in its conference games. A decision, however, must be made by June 1 in order for HHS to join the WIAA for the 2018-19 season.
