Polls won’t close until this evening, but students at Hermiston High School had their say in the election on Monday and the winner in the presidential race was Hillary Clinton – by a narrow margin.
HHS held mock elections on Monday with ballots cast for president, governor, Umatilla County Sheriff and Measure 97.
In the mock presidential election, Clinton edged Trump with 136 votes to 122 or 37 percent to 33 percent. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson was third with 54 votes, Independent candidate Evan McMullin tallied 29 votes while Green Party candidate Jill Stein had 27 votes.
In the governor’s race, HHS students gave the slight edge to incumbent Gov. Kate Brown with 136 votes while Republican candidate Bud Pierce received 131 votes.
Umatilla County Sheriff Terry Rowan swamped his opponent, Ryan Lehnert, 261 votes to 107.
When it came to Measure 97, HHS students rejected the measure, 202 to 166. The measure would increase the corporate minimum tax when sales exceed $25 Million, with funds going to education, health care and senior services.
