Kids throughout Eastern Oregon celebrated Friday’s snow day by heading to the nearest hills with their sleds as school was canceled for much of the area.
Several inches of snow prompted school districts in Hermiston, Pendleton, Helix, Umatilla and Echo to cancel classes for the day and the students wasted no time getting bundled up and ready for a day outside in the snow. The hill behind Sunset Elementary School in Hermiston was put to good use with kids, a few parents and even a couple of dogs enjoying the snow.
And, according to the National Weather Service, more of the fluffy white stuff is heading our way. The winter weather advisory that was supposed to last only until Friday morning was extended through Saturday morning. The forecast calls for between three and seven additional inches of snow to fall in the region tonight and Saturday. The weather service expects heavy snow at times tonight and early Saturday.
The freezing temperatures are expected to warm up early next week turning the snow into rain. By mid-week, the temperatures should return to normal with forecasts calling for the mid-40s.
