Phil Hamm, director of the Hermiston Agricultural Research & Extension Center (HAREC), said total contributions as of Monday were $34,500. Hamm announced late last month that efforts were under way to create a memorial scholarship fund in Horneck’s name.

“I can’t thank enough those who have contributed thus far,” said Hamm. “All this in only a few weeks. We needed $25,000 to endow the account. Now we need to raise enough funds to ensure reasonable yearly return from the interest to support an undergraduate or graduate student working in agronomy or soils at Oregon State University. We really need $100,000.”

Horneck, an Oregon State University extension agronomist at HAREC for 15 years, died unexpectedly on Sept. 28.

“Don was so special to so many of us,” Hamm said. “This scholarship will be a great way to remember him.”

Hamm said supporters can contribute to the fund by going to the OSU Foundation web page, click on “making a gift” then click again on “make a one-time gift” (or monthly contribution) and click on the either option of “making a one-time gift” or “making a pledge payment”. At that point fill in the blank on the figure amount and then under ”area you’d like to support” indicate Don Horneck Memorial Scholarship.
