Got some spare time and are looking for volunteer opportunities in the Hermiston area?

There are plenty of organizations in need of a few more helping hands. A perfect example is the Good Shepherd Auxiliary which provides needed services to the hospital’s various departments. June Rosenberg is one of those volunteers. She joined the Auxiliary right after retiring from Good Shepherd where she was employed for 11 years.

“As I was an employee, I saw the good the volunteers were doing,” she said. During her time as an Auxiliary volunteer, Rosenberg has served on a number of committees in a variety of roles, including restoring Christmas wreaths each year, giving tours of the hospital to children, as well as serving as the Auxiliary secretary for eight years. She is currently the vice president. The Auxiliary also awards scholarships to area students pursuing a career in medicine.

Rosenberg calls herself “homegrown,” having lived in Umatilla Country for 80 years. She and her husband, Henry, raised three daughters. Her passions have been following sports in the community, golf, skiing, photography, gardening and volunteering.

Rosenberg calls the Auxiliary a “volunteering social group” and said one of the benefits to being part of the Auxiliary is the friends she has made over the years.

“I have become friends with so many interesting members, who have become like family to me,” she said. These days, Rosenberg volunteers once a week as a receptionist welcoming patients as they arrive at 6 a.m. for day surgeries. She also spends time each week in the gift shop.

Rosenberg said it is easy to become a volunteer with the Auxiliary. A background check and medium mobility is required, as is a liking for people.
