Howard Louis Burkhardt died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013 at Sun Terrace Assisted Living Facility in Hermiston at the age of 90.

He was born on May 7, 1923 at Spokane, Wash., to Julius Albert and Jessie Bell (Morgan) Burkhardt.

He was raised in Spokane and graduated from Rogers High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during World War II. After the war he earned his bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Idaho. On June 24, 1950 he married Isabelle “Lenore” Borup in Boise, Idaho. He was recalled to active duty in the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. He retired from active service and earned his master’s degree in industrial engineering from Harvard University. He continued to serve in the Air Force Reserves until he retired in 1983 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Howard worked for the State of Idaho Health Department as an environmental engineer for many years in many cities including Pocatello and Boise. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission with his wife in Peoria, Illinois. Howard enjoyed gardening, woodworking, handball and stained glass.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Isabelle “Lenore” Borup Burkhardt; sons, Mark Louis (Adrienne) Burkhardt, Jeffrey Howard (Elizabeth) Burkhardt, and Kent Thomas (Karie) Burkhardt; daughters, Denise Marie (Duane) Barger, Lenna Dene (Ronald) Larson, and Laurene Burkhardt; 21 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius Albert and Jessie Bell (Morgan) Burkhardt; grandparents, Julius and Mary Anna (Waldschmidt) Burkhardt and Samuel and Hannah (Slaven) Morgan; sisters, Mary Janet Thompson and Helen Ward Lallatin.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 4, 2013 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hermiston. Burial with military honors followed at the Hermiston Cemetery.
