The iCan Swim Program this week is teaching basic aquatic and safety skills to 22 swimmers with disabilities at the Hermiston Family Aquatic Center.
The program, created by iCan Shine and running through Friday, allows participants to work with 18 volunteers to develop swimming skills with a daily emphasis on life-saving water safety techniques. The five-day camp offers swimmers the chance to attend a 45-minute or 60-minute session each day, tailored to their age and skill level.
The program is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Arc of Umatilla County, and Hermiston Parks & Recreation. Additional support is provided by Good Shepherd Health Care System, Hermiston School District, USA Subs, Desert Lanes Family Fun Center, and Greater Hermiston Community Foundation.
“We’re so grateful to the sponsors and volunteers who have made this camp possible and given these participants the opportunity to enjoy the pool while learning important skills,” said Hermiston Parks & Recreation Director Brandon Artz. “These water safety training sessions have become a big part of our programming at the Hermiston Family Aquatic Center and we’re having a great time increasing swimming opportunities for everyone.”
