The National Weather Service has issued an ice storm warning for the Lower Columbia Basin that is in effect until 10 a.m. this morning.
A pacific storm system will affect the Northwest through Thursday. Warmer air riding over the arctic air mass will result in freezing rain, sleet and higher elevations of snow in many area of Northeast Oregon as well as South Central and Southeast Washington.
A wintry mix of precipitation is expected to continue into Thursday.
The ice storm warning for today is expected to impact the Hermiston, Boardman and Ione areas.
The weather service is expecting up to a quarter inch to half an inch of freezing rain and sleet.
School has been canceled for Wednesday in Hermiston, Boardman, Irrigon, Umatilla and Pendleton due to icy roads. Ice began accumulating Tuesday afternoon. The Boardman City Council canceled its Tuesday night meeting due to hazardous road conditions.
The forecast for the coming days calls for warmer temperatures mixed with rain beginning later today. Temperatures are expected to reach the high 30s and low 40s by this afternoon.
