Incumbents Enjoy Tuesday's Election Results

As usual, election night was a good one for incumbents.

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber won an unprecedented fourth term as governor, defeating his Republican challenger Dennis Richardson, 48.79 percent to 45.45 percent for his opponent. Umatilla County voters favored Richardson by an overwhelming percentage, 65.56 percent to 29.19 percent.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley received 54.8 percent of the statewide vote, compared with 37.96 percent for his GOP challenger, Monica Wehby. Merkley, however, received support from just 35.52 percent of Umatilla County voters, compared with 57.19 percent for Wehby.

U.S. Rep. Greg Walden (R-Hood River) blew past his opponent, Aelea Christofferson, collecting 70.62 percent of the statewide vote. In Umatilla County, Walden’s percentage was even larger at 75.93 percent.

Oregon State Rep. Greg Smith (R-Heppner) was re-elected. He ran unopposed.
