Three of J.C. Penney’s four stores east of the Oregon Cascades will close – in Pendleton, La Grande and The Dalles, the company said in a news release.
Only the company’s store in Bend will remain open.
Also hit with closures will be stores in Astoria and Grants Pass. With the closures, Oregon will have nine J.C. Penney stores that remain open.
In all, 138 locations will close in the coming months as part of its plan to cut costs. Most are located within malls or shopping centers. Liquidation sales will start at the stores on April 17, and most will shut down by June, the company said.
The stores represent 14 percent of the company’s locations, but account for only 5 percent of sales. About 5,000 employees will lose their jobs as a result of the closures.
