Janet Marie Pedersen (Sharp) of Hermiston passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at home on Oct. 24, 2024 at the age of 65.
Janet was born on April 30, 1959 in La Grande to Carol Hamilton and Roy Pedersen. She later moved to Hermiston, where she attended most of her school years and graduated from Hermiston High School in 1977. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oregon.
In the 1980s Janet welcomed two children, Jeff and Kelsey Gilbertson, into her life. She was immensely proud of her children; Jeff served in the U.S. Navy and is currently in the Navy Reserves, and Kelsey was known for her helpful nature, especially as the mother of Janet’s first and only grandson, Camron.
As a dedicated resident of the Pacific Northwest, Janet also lived in Helena, Mont. for a time, moving back once or twice throughout her life. It was her all-time favorite place to be.
Her professional career included many years at the Department of Transportation, followed by a committed role in civil rights and discrimination advocacy.
Janet had a deep love for nature, which inspired her to explore and hike extensively through the mountains of Oregon, Washington, and Montana. Her kindness knew no bounds, as she often sheltered stray animals, particularly cats, and she enjoyed spending time with new friends at Desert Sage. She made friends everywhere she went who all loved her deeply. She had a passion for sewing, a fun-loving personality and always tried to have a positive outlook, no matter the situation.
She is survived by her son, Jeff Gilbertson of Montana; her daughter, Kelsey Gilbertson and grandson, Camron Gilbertson of Hermiston; stepsiblings, Carla Hamilton and Joanie Coons; along with many extended family members, friends, and her loyal cat, Mazie.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Carol Hamilton and Roy Pedersen; brother, Greg Pedersen; and stepparent, Merl Hamilton.
A funeral service will be announced and held at a later time.
A GoFundMe account has been set up under “Janet Pedersen” to help with the unexpected costs.
