John A. Herrera Sr. of Hermiston died on Oct. 9, 2022 in Hermiston at the age of 94.
He was born on Feb. 18, 1928 in McPhee, Colo. to Ralph Herrera Sr. and Mary Mares Herrera.
John was raised in Colorado and New Mexico. He was united in marriage to Paula Rodriguez on July 21, 1946 in Torrington, Wyo. They lived in Wyoming for a short time before moving to Sidney, Neb. and then to Hermiston in 1965.
John worked at the Umatilla Army Depot until it closed in 1974. He then worked at the Yakima Firing Center until 1979. John then worked for JR Simplot for 12 years. He and Paula owned and operated J&P Mobile Home Park in Hermiston for over 30 years.
John was a member of Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Hermiston. He enjoyed working, gardening, flowers, collecting tools, bird watching and time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by sons, John Jr. (Terry) Herrera, Umatilla, Ray Herrera, Salem and Angelo (Debbie) Herrera, Hermiston; daughter, Betty Lewter, Hermiston; brothers, Percy Herrera, Sidney, Neb., Joe Herrera, Greeley, Colo. and Jerry Herrera, Sidney, Neb.; sisters, Virginia Aguirre, Hermiston, Josie Adolf, Denver, Colo., Elizabeth Ramirez, Greeley, Colo. and Della Hernandez, Denver, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
John was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 75 years, Paula Herrera; a grandson, Timothy Herrera; son-in-law, Larry Lewter; his parents; a sister, Mary Virgil; and a brother, Ralph Herrera Jr.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Hermiston.
Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10:30 a.m.
Burial will follow at the Hermiston Cemetery.
