Not only is Tuesday the start of the Umatilla County Fair, but it is also the 30th anniversary of National Night Out, a crime-and-drug-prevention event geared toward the entire community.
The Hermiston Police Department encourages everyone to take part from 6 to 8 p.m., by locking their doors, turning on their porch lights and spending the evening outside with your neighbors, police and firefighters.
Many neighborhoods throughout Hermiston will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, ice cream socials, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities and anti-crime rallies.
National Night Out is designed to:
• Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
• Generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
• Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
