All area residents are invited to an afternoon of food, fun and fellowship during this year’s family friendly Juneteenth Celebration, Saturday, June 17 from 4 to 8 p.m. in McKenzie Park, 320 S. First St., Hermiston.
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas with the announcement that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as “Juneteenth,” by the newly freed people in Texas.
Hermiston’s Juneteenth event is sponsored by the Hermiston Cultural Awareness Coalition. The free event features a barbecue, music, a kids’ bouncy castle and community information booths and a dance performance. For more information and/or provide a booth or service please contact: Dave Gracia: daveegracia@yahoo.com.
This seems like a funny time to remove all the picnic tables.
Surely the parks depth will put them back in time for this important, historic celebration, right?
Put the benches and picnic tables back. We actually could use more sitting areas placed strategically around the park.
