Kathy Carper Passes Away at 89

Kathryn M. “Kathy” Carper of Hermiston died on July 17, 2024 in Hermiston at the age of 89.

She was born on Sept. 5, 1934 in Wallowa to Orville and Aura Coats McKenzie.

She was raised and attended school in Wallowa. Kathy was united in marriage to Bernard W. “Bernie” Carper on April 5, 1953 at her parents’ home in Wallowa. They settled in Hermiston in 1963, where she had lived since.

Kathy was a stay-at-home mom, raising their children for several years before joining Bernie at Moore & Ripley Drug Store until selling it in 1986. Kathy was an active member of the Hermiston First Christian Church, serving as a deaconess for many years, and a life member of the Good Shepherd Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed hummingbirds, baking, playing bunco, canning and spending time with her children and four-legged grand-kids.

She is survived by her sons, Steve Carper, Moses Lake, Wash. and Jeff Carper, Hermiston; daughter, Carolleen Lovell, Hermiston; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kathy was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, Ted and a son-in-law, Gary Lovell.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024 at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church, 775 W. Highland Ave., Hermiston.

A private burial will be at the Hermiston Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Kathy’s memory may be made to the Hermiston First Christian Church or the Good Shepherd Hospital Auxiliary.
